Irish Legend story
“Granuaile knocking in Howth Castle Door ..15c ”
In the 15th centuay in Ireland Granuaile (Grace O’Malley) was known as the Queen of Ireland ( some say Pirate Queen ) and lived till old age having one daughter and two sons.
She reigned over the Wild Atlantic Way. Into the Clew bay area beyond Galway and had a Castle on Clare Island.
She owned 3 gallion ships, each having 300 men on each. The Queen of England Elizabeth 1st, through the unjust reigning nobleman in Galway, Lord Bingham, captured two of her sons and held them in prison.
In 1592 Granuaile wrote to Queen Elizabeth Ist to protest against Bingham’s behaviour, and to emphasise her right to her ancestral lands.
In 1593, July, Granuaile met Queen Elizabeth Ist in person and impressed the Queen enough to have her sons released from prison and to be allowed to return to her old lands, on the promise that she would stop plundering the ‘strangers’ in Galway.
On her way back from England she stopped at Howth Castle Dublin East Ireland, to get refreshments before travelling on to Clew Bay. However Lord Howth, the Owner at the time, would not let her in due to her reputation as the Pirate Queen of Ireland. Granuaile was infuriated that the Queen of England could give her court, but an Irishman would not welcome her as was the Irish tradition. So then she took Lord Howth’s Granson and Heir playing in the garden back to Clew Bay until the Owner came to Clew Bay, learned his lesson, and relased him back on the promise that a place would be always set for her any time she came.
This was agreed and to this day a place is set for here every Christmas in Howth Castle.Howth Dublin Ireland, for over 400 years.
