Menlo also called called Blake’s Castle, is a 16th century castle situated on the bank of the River Corrib near Menlo village in County Galway, Ireland.
The Blakes Castle controlled the boat traffic from the Corrib lake in Galway to the sea via the Corrib river for 500 years.
The Blakes are one of the fourteen tribes of galway. Sir Valentine Blake was the last Blake to reside there.. after the fire the estate was divided up amongst the tenants by the land commission 1923.
One man’s loss another village’s gain. The new bridge for the new ring road if it’s ever built will pass by the castle to the right, south of the castle
James Joyce would have visited Blakes castle with his son, when he attended the regatta there c. 1906
