The Skellig Islands are two small, steep, and rocky islands about 8 km lying off the Kerry coast in the Atlantic sea, Ireland.
I endeavoured to capture the etherial nature of the islands with the rolling Mist coming over the smaller Skellig rock .. and the intregue of the 10c Monks stone huts
It’s possible to visit the early10c monks huts on Skellig Michael made from surrounding stones there. –
These are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The twin islands about 900 acres, are home for puffins and Seagulls
The Annals of the Four Masters detail events at the Skelligs between the 9th and 11th centuries. These entries suggest that Eitgall of Skellig, the monastery’s abbot, was taken by the Vikings in 823 and died of starvation thereafter…
There were about 12 monks who lived there in 4 or 5 huts they lived in fishing, birds eggs, and grew their own vegetables.
hut, known as cell A, has a floor area of 15 × 4 metres, and is 5 metres high. Like the other huts, its internal walls are straight before narrowing to accommodate its dome roof.
can you see the light on in one of the the largest Monks 🙂
In the same Annels writings, a shipwreck occured around 1400 BC, said to have been caused by the Tuatha Dé Danann, a supernatural race in Irish mythology. According to legend, Irr, son of Míl Espáine (who is sometimes credited with the colonisation of Ireland), was travelling from the Iberian Peninsula, but drowned and was buried on the island.
[7] Daire Domhain (“King of the World”) is said to have stayed there c. 200 AD before attacking Fionn mac Cumhaill’s army in nearby Ventry….
there Fionn is again ! ……
