The Children of Lir….Poignant Irish Legend
Long long ago there was a King called Lir. He lived in a castle with his wife and four beautiful children Fionnula, Aodh, Conn and Fiachra. Lir’s wife died and they all missed her very much. The king saw that his children were very sad and needed a mother, so he decided to marry again. The High King Bodh sent Aoife, his daughter, to be Lir’s new wife.
This was an alliance that ended a long fued between the Kings.
At first Aoife loved the children, but soon she started to grow jealous of them. She knew that Lir loved them more that he loved her. She wanted the kings love all for herself so she planned to get rid of the children.
One day Aoife brought the children aged 8 6 and the twins 4, to swim in Lough Derravaragh. When the children were playing Aoife took out a Druid’s magic wand and she cast a spell on them and In their place was left four beautiful white swans.
King Lir was distraught, banished Aoife, and died beside his Swan children listening to their singing until he passed to the Otherworld.
They stayed and sang on lake Derravaragh for 300 years, then flew to the Sea of Moyle
between Ireland and Scotland for another 300 years. Their poor little feet were so cold they froze stuck in the lake and Fionnula knit then 4 gansies from the reeds there to keep them warm.
Then when the summer came they flew back to the Inis Glora Lake in Mayo where their spell was broken by the sound of a church bell. They told their story to a Monk there and as blessed them, they turned back to being humans but old and then they all passed to the Otherworld to be with their Father and Mother happily ever after in the Otherworld.
